I pray that your heart be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he has called – his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. (Ephesians 1:18)
For us to know God and all He has done for us in Christ, it will take the supernatural work of God. It will require that our hearts be flooded with the light of God. Or as some translation translate it, “the eyes of your understanding be enlightened by God.”
Paul used a great expression when he spoke of the eyes of our hearts (heart is more literal than understanding). Too many Christian hearts have no eyes (places where they gain real knowledge and understanding), and too many Christian eyes have no heart – God wants both to be combined in us. He wants us to have an eye to see and a heart to feel.
The term ‘heart’ in Scripture signifies the very core and center of life, where intelligence has its post of observation, where the stores of experience are laid up, and the thoughts have their fountain.
Paul took it upon himself to pray that these Christians understand God. I believe this is one of those prayer Scriptures that tells us to pray constantly. We are to pray for understanding always! We are to pray for God’s light to flood our hearts so that we can understand the Bible. We are to pray to be enlightened. Without this, we cannot know God or the things He has done for us in Christ.
Doing the Word: Always pray for light in your study of God’s word.
Prayer: Dear Father, I ask that You flood my heart with Your light so that I may understand You and the things You have done for me in Christ, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
