It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king. (1 Peter 2:15-17)
It’s astonishing that Peter commands Christians living under the Roman Empire, likely during Nero’s rule, one of the most brutal emperors in history. And yet, Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, commands them not to rebellion or contempt, but to respect.
Why? Because honor is not just about the person, it’s about your posture. As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect heaven’s values, even in the midst of earthly injustice.
To respect the king means to acknowledge authority without compromising truth. It means praying for leaders, even if we disagree with them. It means standing for righteousness with humility, not arrogance. It means resisting evil when necessary. But never losing the spirit of honor.
This command does not mean blind allegiance. It means you respond with integrity. You disagree without dishonor. You obey God first, but in doing so, you model what it means to be a citizen of heaven and a light to the world.
Peter’s command to “respect the king” was radical then, and it’s radical now. But it reveals the heart of a believer who trusts that God is the ultimate King, and He alone lifts and brings down rulers.
Doing the Word
Respect the king.
Prayer
Dear Father, You are the King above all kings. Help me to honor those in authority, not because they are perfect, but because You have asked me to. Give me wisdom, courage, and a heart that reflects Your grace, even in difficult places. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Great point
Paul made same point in the book of Acts when he was smacked on the mouth by the High Priest. "Dont speak ill of the leader of a people." Its about the position, not the person, and as you said "living under God's Laws"
Thanks for sharing 🙏
