I am writing to Titus, my true son in the faith that we share. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior give you grace and peace. (Titus 1:2-3)
Paul now introduces us to the recipient of this letter, a man named Titus. Titus is mentioned 13 times in the New Testament (2 Corinthians 2:13; 7:6, 13, 14; 8:6, 16, 23; 12:18 [2 times]; Galatians 2:1, 3; 2 Timothy 4: 10). He was a Greek, a non-Jewish convert who became something of a “test case” for the gospel and the fact that one does not need to become a Jew, evidenced by circumcision, to be saved.
Titus had a special relationship with the troubled church at Corinth, and his work there and on the difficult island of Crete revealed Paul’s confidence in him. To Paul, Titus was the man who could go into the hard places and set things in order, get things fixed, and make things right. Their relationship was deep—it was that of a father and son.
Doing the Word
Be someone whom God can trust to do His work.
Prayer
Dear Father, I ask for grace to carry out the assignment You have for me. I know You saved me to spread Your Kingdom. Help me because without You I can do nothing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
